The No. 23 Kansas Jayhawks aren’t going to finish the regular season where they used to the past several seasons, which was on top of the Big 12 standings. They will be looking to extend their stay inside the Top 25 rankings by scoring a win over the No. 17 West Virginia Mountaineers, who looked shaky the last time out. Betting on the Kansas Jayhawks (odds)
Record: 12-6 Overall / 6-4 Conference
Kansas is coming off a decisive (and predictable) 74-51 win over the Kansas State Wildcats at home on Tuesday. That win should rinse some of the bad taste left in the Jayhawks’ mouth by their 80-61 road loss to the Tennessee Volunteers during the Big 12-SEC Challenge over the weekend. The Jayhawks got plenty of scoring from their starting unit, with four of five starters scoring at least 10 points. The Jayhawks are averaging 72.6 points per game so far this season while giving up 69.1. Kansas could go back-to-back against the Mountaineers, whom the Jayhawks defeated back in December in Lawrence, 79-65. The Jayhawks should be liking their chances of taking down the Mountaineers again, considering that West Virginia no longer has Oscar Tshiebwe, who played for Bob Huggins in the first meeting with Kansas this season. Christian Braun will look to wreak havoc again against WVU. He had 22 points and six 3-pointers in the win over the Mountaineers, while David McCormack had a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Kansas is 6-4 against the spread in its last 10 road games.
Betting on the West Virginia Mountaineers (odds)
Record: 12-5 Overall / 5-3 Conference
West Virginia recovered from an 85-80 home loss to the Florida Gators over the weekend by taking down the Iowa State Cyclones in Ames on Tuesday for a 76-72 victory. Although the Mountaineers had a harder time beating Iowa State than they were expected to as 11.5-point favorites, it was still a nice win for Huggins’ squad, which is averaging 75.7 points per game. West Virginia has one of the best offenses in the nation, per KenPom. The Mountaineers are 17th nationally with 114.2 points per 100 possessions. They are tough to beat on the offensive glass, as evidenced by the fact that they are eighth overall with a 36.5 offensive rebound percentage. They had 18 offensive rebounds in the December game with Kansas. Sean McNeil led the Mountaineers in that game with 25 points, while Miles McBride had 19 points and six rebounds.
The over is 3-0 in West Virginia’s last three home games.
Writer’s Prediction
West Virginia wins, 73-70.
