Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (odds)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The Chargers are set with quarterback Justin Herbert after he had a record-setting rookie season, so there’s really no reason for them to see more of him in a preseason setting. Against the Rams, it will be Chase Daniel, Easton Stick, and KJ Costello driving the offense from under center. One player the Bolts are eager to see perform is rookie left tackle Rashawn Slater, who was taken by the Chargers in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft in hopes of having someone help protect Herbert for a long time. The Chargers are projected to be a pass-heavy team again after averaging 270.6 passing yards per game in 2020 — sixth in the NFL — so it’s also intriguing to see what rookie wideout Josh Palmer can bring to the table.
The under is 3-1 in the Chargers’ last four preseason games.
Betting on the Los Angeles Rams (odds)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
Matthew Stafford is unlikely to appear in even a single snap for this game and so does backup John Woolford, who’s recuperating from an appendectomy. With that, the pair of Bryce Perkins and Devlin Hodges will be able to get more run under center this coming weekend. With Cam Akers also going down with an injury that ended his 2021 NFL season before it could even begin, the Rams are going to have most of their attention in the backfield composed of Darrell Henderson Jr., Xavier Jones, Jake Funk, and Raymond Calais. Henderson is expected to be RB1 in the regular season, while Jones has a serious chance of becoming named as the main backup, and a strong performance in the preseason should help him attain that goal.
The Rams are 3-0-1 against the spread in their last four preseason games at home.
Writer’s Prediction
The Chargers win, 20-17.
