Betting on the Carolina Panthers (-2.5)
Regular Season Record: 3-3
It was an up-and-down game for the Panthers in Week 6 against the Minnesota Vikings. Sam Darnold and company ultimately fell prey to the Vikings at home in overtime, 34-26, Carolina’s third loss in a row. Getting out of their slump has been difficult for the Panthers in large part because Christian McCaffrey is injured. But they might not feel his absence that much in Week 7 against the Giants, who don’t have two things: a decent offense and a dependable defense. In other words, this game is an opportunity for Darnold to shine again. New York’s defense just gave up four passing touchdowns to Matthew Stafford in Week 6. Darnold is not yet on Stafford’s level, but the Giants’ defense can make middling quarterbacks look like Hall of Famers.
The Panthers, who entered Week 6 averaging 23.8 points per game, are 8-1 against the spread in their last nine contests away from home.
Betting on the New York Giants (+2.5)
Regular Season Record: 5-1
The Giants have big problems left and right. They have quite a list of injured bodies. Their defense is not good and their offense is subpar. But even with those issues, the Giants should have enough to keep in step with Carolina. Daniel Jones threw three interceptions in their 38-11 loss at home to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 6, as he played his first game since suffering a concussion in Week 6. Another week of rest could get him back up to speed. Jones was exceeding expectations prior to his head injury, and the Panthers’ rapidly deteriorating defense could just be what the doctor ordered to wake up the Giants’ attack. New York doesn’t have much of a pass rush, but the Giants can still find success against the Panthers’ offensive line that had just allowed four sacks to the Vikings.
The Giants are 9-3 against the spread in their last 12 games after failing to cover the spread in the previous contest.
Writer’s Prediction
The Panthers win, 20-17.
