Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (-1.5)
Regular Season Record: 4-3
The Chargers are on the slump all of a sudden. They followed up a 34-6 road loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6 with a 27-24 defeat at home against the New England Patriots. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert passed for 223 yards and two touchdowns, but completed just 18 of 25 passes and also got intercepted twice. He should have fewer problems with his accuracy this coming Sunday against the Eagles’ defense that is last in the NFL in opponents’ completion percentage. The Eagles also don’t have that much in the pass rush, ranking just 18th in sack rate. That means more time for Herbert to find Austin Ekeler, Mike Williams, and of course, Keenan Allen downfield.
The Chargers, seventh in the NFL with 271.9 passing yards per game, are 4-1 against the spread in their last five road games.
Betting on the Philadelphia Eagles (+1.5)
Regular Season Record: 3-5
The Eagles snapped a two-game losing skid by doing what the rest of the league is doing: beating the Detroit Lions. Philadelphia ran all over the Lions’ defense in a 44-6 road win. The Eagles rushed for 236 yards, with Jalen Hurts leading the way with 71 rushing yards on seven carries. Boston Scott, taking over as the top guy among the quarterbacks with Miles Sanders out with injury, burned rubber for 60 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Even Jordan Howard had two rushing scores. Detroit is just that bad, and the Eagles might not be as effective running the ball against the Chargers, but that doesn’t mean they are unlikely to have significant success. After all, LA is the worst in the NFL against the run, with 159.4 rushing yards allowed per contest.
The Eagles are 6-2 against the spread in their last eight games as a home underdog.
Writer’s Prediction
The Chargers win, 26-23.
