Betting on the Philadelphia Eagles (-4)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
Last season, the Eagles ran the air out of the football, as they rushed for 156.1 yards per game. They also had a 49.87 rushing play rate. Both those numbers were no. 1 in the NFL in 2021, but there could be more variance to their offensive attack. For one, they added stud wide receiver AJ Brown to the roster in the offseason, while wide receiver DeVonta Smith should be better in his second year in the NFL. Jalen Hurts’ emergence as one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL is also giving the Eagles plenty of hope for the 2022 season. On defense, the Eagles secondary is looking fine with Darius Slay being joined by 2022 Philly acquisitions Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and James Bradberry. That shiny stop unit could come away with a turnover or two against the Lions’ turnover-prone offense that gave away the ball 1.4 times per game in 2021.
The Under is 4-1 in the Eagles’ last five road games.
Betting on the Detroit Lions (+4)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The Lions were a letdown in 2021. They finished that season with just a 3-13-1 record, though they should have had more wins if they only made better decisions in a few close contests that saw them end with an L. Jared Goff remains the quarterback of the Lions, and while he’s always been blamed for Detroit’s lackluster showing in 2021, he was not entirely responsible for that. He still passed for 3,245 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2021, and despite his eight interceptions, managed to connect on 67.2 percent of his pass attempts. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown could fully break out in 2022 after a solid 2021 campaign and he is joined downfield by Lions newcomer DJ Chark. Running back D’Andre Swift is also a terrific weapon out of the backfield who rushed for 617 yards with five rushing scores and recorded 452 receiving yards with two touchdown grabs in 2021. Detroit’s defense is also bound to improve with second-overall pick and defensive end Aidan Hutchinson now in the team’s fold.
The Lions are 4-0 against the spread in their last 4 games as a home underdog.
Writer’s Prediction
The Eagles win, 26-23.
