Betting on the Iowa State Cyclones (odds)
Record: 13-2 Overall / 1-2 Conference
The Cyclones are off to a rough start in conference play, as they have lost two of their first three games against Big 12 teams this season. In their most recent outing, they got preyed upon by the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman in a 79-66 loss last Saturday. But prior to that, Iowa State caught a big fish in a 51-47 home win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Jan. 5. Defense is Iowa State’s biggest asset as a team this season, as the Cyclones are sixth in adjusted defensive efficiency in the nation. The team’s pesky defense has resulted in an opponents’ turnover rate of 23 percent –the fifth-highest in Division I basketball. That’s not a good sign for Kansas, which has a high-scoring offense, but is so prone to turnovers, at least that’s what the Jayhawks’ 24.6% turnover rate in Big 12 play suggests.
Iowa State is 6-4 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.
Betting on the Kansas Jayhawks (odds)
Record: 12-2 Overall / 1-1 Conference
While the Cyclones had success against the Red Raiders, the Jayhawks did not. Kansas had its eight-game win streak halted in a 75-67 loss to Texas Tech in Lubbock last Saturday. Nevertheless, Ochai Agbaji put up a sound performance, scoring 24 points with six threes in 35 minutes. Kansas also hit 10 3-pointers on 26 attempts. The Jayhawks are second in the Big 12 with a 38.8 3-point shooting percentage, and that kind of efficiency from behind the arc could loosen up Iowa State’s stout perimeter defense. When the Sooners beat Iowa State, they went 7/12 from long range to help overcome their 12 turnovers. For what it’s worth, Kansas has six players who are shooting 35 percent or better from the 3-point area, including Agbaji who leads the team with a 47.3 3FG% clip.
Kansas is 6-4 against the spread in its last 10 games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
Kansas wins, 76-64.
