Betting on the Michigan State Spartans (odds)
Record: 14-3 Overall/5-1 Conference
Michigan State tasted defeat for the first time after a long while, as the Spartans lost to the Northwestern Wildcats at home last Saturday, 64-62. That ended the Spartans’ nine-game win streak. Michigan State got outworked on the glass by the Wildcats, with Northwestern coming away with 15 offensive rebounds to just six by the Spartans. That led to a ton of extra shots for Northwestern, which was a plus-15 on field-goal attempts in that game. Michigan State should have fewer issues rebounding the ball on defense against Wisconsin, which is just 208th in the nation in offensive rebounding percentage. Speaking of defense, the Spartans are third in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency with 112.3 points allowed per 100 possessions.
Michigan State, which is averaging 74.7 points per outing, is 3-0 against the spread in its last three games overall.
Betting on the Wisconsin Badgers (odds)
Record: 14-2 Overall/5-1 Conference
The Badgers have stitched together a six-game win streak after avenging their December loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes with a 78-68 home win last Thursday over Chris Holtmann’s team. Wisconsin put the handcuffs on the Buckeyes’ shooters, with Ohio State going just 3/19 from deep. The Badgers, on the other hand, hit 10 of 23 attempts from deep. That kind of stout perimeter defense will have to show up again for Wisconsin against Michigan State, which is 12th in the nation in 3-point shooting percentage. The Badgers can also just slow the game down and limit Michigan State’s possessions just like they always do. Wisconsin is 246th in the nation per KenPom in terms of adjusted tempo with 67.2 possessions per 40 minutes. Moreover, Wisconsin is so good at taking care of the leather, ranking no. 1 nationally with just 8.2 turnovers per game.
Wisconsin, which faces Northwestern on the road Tuesday, is 4-2 against the spread in its last six games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
Wisconsin wins, 71-68.
