Betting on the Northwestern Wildcats (+10.5)

Record: 14-13 Overall/4-10 Conference

Northwestern just to finish strong in its remaining two games in conference play, beginning with a showdown with the Hawkeyes this Monday. The Wildcats are 1-5 straight up in their last six games and are coming off a 67-60 road loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions. They were up 28-22 at the half but couldn’t sustain their form in the second half where Northwestern got outscored by 13 points. Pete Nance led the Wildcats with 12 points while Boo Bouie had eight points and seven assists despite being slowed down by foul trouble. Northwestern is hoping that its defense will make a big difference against Iowa, as the Wildcats are No. 1 in the Big Ten in opponents’ turnover percentage (19.6%). They will also be looking for lots of help from its bench which is 32nd nationally in terms of minutes.

Northwestern is 6-3-1 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.

Betting on the Iowa Hawkeyes (-10.5)

Record: 21-6 Overall/10-4 Conference

Iowa, meanwhile, is having a good run towards the end of Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes have hit the bullseye in all of their past three games, including their 88-78 road win against the Nebraska Cornhuskers last Friday. The Hawkeyes are now 6-1 straight up in their last seven games overall, a stretch that has seen the team beat the likes of the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Michigan State Spartans. Iowa is a dangerous team mainly because of its offense and discipline. The Hawkeyes are fifth in the nation with 120.5 points per 100 possessions and own the best turnover percentage (12.4%) in Division I basketball. They have scored at least 75 points in each of their last three games. On the season, Iowa is averaging 83.8 points per game. The game against Northwestern will be a great test for the Hawkeyes’ ballhandlers, though Iowa should be able to come through successfully from that challenge, considering that it has the better talent up and down the roster.

Iowa is 4-2 against the spread in its last six games overall.

Writer’s Prediction

Iowa wins, 80-70.
