The Penn State Nittany Lions demolished the Northwestern Wildcats in Week 6 at home, 17-7. It was not the most impressive of wins, at least offensively, for Penn State, but that still managed to keep the team undefeated. The Michigan Wolverines, on the other hand, are also still without a loss following an easy 31-10 victory in Bloomington last Saturday over the Indiana Hoosiers. Both unbeaten in Big Ten play, which between Penn State and Michigan will carry a spotless conference record into Week 8? Betting on the Penn State Nittany Lions (+7.0)
Record: 5-0 Overall / 2-0 Conference
Defense has always been the name of the game for Penn State this season and it showed once again over the weekend when the Nittany Lions suffocated Northwestern’s attack – particularly on the ground. The Wildcats managed to cough up just 31 rushing yards on 28 carries. That sturdy run defense will be put to the test in Week 7 versus the Wolverines, who arguably have the best running back in the nation this season in the form of Blake Corum. Penn State entered Week 6 ranked ninth in the nation with just 14.8 points allowed per game and fifth with only 82.2 rushing yards surrendered per contest. Offensively, Penn State is much better than what its scoring output against Northwestern suggests. The Nittany Lions scored no fewer than 35 points in each of their wins over the Purdue Boilermakers and Auburn Tigers.
Penn State is 3-2 against the spread in its last five games overall.
Betting on the Michigan Wolverines (-7.0)
Record: 6-0 Overall / 2-0 Conference
Speaking of Blake Corum, he strengthened his Heisman Trophy case with a sensational performance in the win over the Hoosiers. Corum rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. Penn State’s run defense, as mentioned earlier, is among the sturdiest in the nation, but it hasn’t been quite tested yet by a rushing attack like that of Michigan’s which is led by a legitimately good tailback. The Wolverines walked into their Week 6 outing against Indiana 16th nationally with 212.3 rushing yards per game. Defensively, Michigan could capitalize on a seemingly sloppy Penn State attack that just lost the ball five times (four via fumbles) versus Northwestern.
Michigan is 6-4 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Michigan wins, 30-21.
