Running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. rushed for a dizzying total of 196 rushing yards to go with two touchdowns on just 31 carries in Kentucky’s win against Mississippi State. That was a clear show of muscle for the Wildcats’ offense that entered Week 8 averaging 25.7 points per game. Meanwhile, quarterback Will Levis passed for 230 yards and a touchdown with an interception on 17/23 completions. It was Levis’s first game back from a suspension, so he should be more rust-free when the Wildcats take on the Vols. But Kentucky’s defense perhaps deserved more respect after holding down Mississippi State to fewer than 17 points. It’s the same Bulldogs squad that went into that contest putting up 35.4 points per game.
Kentucky is 7-2-1 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.
Betting on the Tennessee Volunteers (-12.5)
Record: 7-0 Overall / 3-0 Conference
Tennessee did what it was supposed to do against the Skyhawks. After beating the Alabama Crimson Tide in an upset at home in Week 7, there’s no way that Tennessee would falter against an opponent several levels below them. Quarterback Herndon Hooker got a great “tuneup” for the meeting with Kentucky, as he passed for 276 yards and three touchdowns versus UT Martin without also giving up an interception on 18/24 completions. Behind the impressive season Hooker is having, the Volunteers have become arguably the most dangerous offensive team in the nation, as they are averaging nearly 50 points per outing. If Kentucky wants to play smashmouth football, it should know that the Volunteers are top 10 in the league against the run.
Tennessee is 7-3 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Tennessee wins, 37-20.
