Although big names like Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson are not going to compete in this tournament, Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar – two players we discussed in our comprehensive preview of this event – will be there to add high-end star power to the field.
Sure, Watson and Kuchar are the favorites to win at Cromwell, but so were McIlroy and Mickelson in the U.S. Open, both of whom ultimately lost to a sleeper in Martin Kaymer. Priced at +3,500 to win at Cromwell, Charley Kauffman has had a couple of near-wins in the last two editions of the Travelers Championship; he finished T2 in 2012, and followed it up with a T7 in 2013, where he came out firing in the first round with a 61. Hoffman and tournament favorite Bubba Watson, are the only golfers who have finished T10 or better in the event in each of the last two years.
The fourteen-year pro is ranked No. 6 overall in birdie average with 4.06 after birdieing an amazing 272 times in 67 total rounds thus far on the PGA Tour season.
Paul Casey
Englishman Paul Casey (+3,500) is yet to win a tournament this season, but has consistently put himself in the position to. Casey has finished in the top-25 six times in his last seven starts, including a T13 in the Memorial Tournament earlier this month where he shot consecutive 66s in the first two rounds before fading with a 76 and 73.
Such disappointments caused by inconsistent play have been a recurring narrative for Casey this season. Nevertheless, he’s once been a top-three player in the world, and is certainly capable of delivering four straight rounds of great golf. Casey is currently ranked 82nd in terms of getting to greens in regulation percentage with 65.34%
Louis Oosthuizen
Louis Oosthuizen (+5,000) would probably like his PGA Tour career to emulate his more prolific form at the European Tour. The South African currently owns seven European Tour titles and has a solitary PGA Tour win coming from his 2010 Open Championship victory.
Oosthuizen has played in 11 PGA Tour events so far on the season, and finished in the top 25 four times and inside the top 10 once, when he had a T5 in the World Golf Championships last February.
