[sc:Football ]Update on Richard Sherman’s Elbow Injury
Where It Started
[sc:NFL240banner ]Richard Sherman injured his left arm early in the fourth quarter of the NFC Championship Game. He was attempting to tackle Green Bay running back James Starks in the first play from scrimmage of the quarter when a teammate collided and hyperextended his arm. Sherman would continue to play despite noticeably showing pain and discomfort using the injured arm.
Full Extent of the Injury
Despite the injury, Seahawks head team physician David J. Chao said that the hyperextended elbow won’t make Sherman miss the Super Bowl. On Monday, Albert Breer of NFL.com reported that an MRI revealed that Sherman suffered a sprained left elbow.
With a sprained left elbow, Sherman can’t lift his left arm above his shoulder without considerable pain. The injury may prevent him from batting passes down using his left arm, or even raise the said arm to attempt a pick. Since he managed to return to the game, then he may have suffered only a mild sprain which typically heals in two to six weeks. Super Bowl XLIX is set to occur in about two weeks’ time.
Sherman doesn’t plan to miss practice. This may be detrimental to his healing as going back to his routine may only prolong the usual healing time for these types of injuries. Still, taking the necessary precautions and being careful should help Sherman get back into shape.
If all goes according to plan, then Sherman may be ready for Super Bowl XLIX.
Untested
What makes Sherman’s injury so interesting was the fact that he wasn’t tested by Aaron Rodgers despite his bad arm in the NFC Championship Game. This may be attributed to Rodgers’ first interception of the game on his first target heading Sherman’s way in the end zone.
Sherman has 20 career interceptions on fade passes, a league-high. If Bill Belichik’s game-planning and the New England Patriots are to be trusted, then they’ll definitely look to test this perceived chink in Seattle secondary. The Patriots have a couple of capable receivers in Julian Edelman and Brandon Lafell. Edelman is ranked third in receiving yards this postseason with 172, while Lafell has caught a touchdown for the Pats.
