Betting on the San Francisco Giants

The San Francisco Giants nicked two runs off of Clayton Kershaw yesterday, and that proved more than enough for Madison Bumgarner to deliver a big 2-1 win. The Giants have now gone 4-1 in five games against the Dodgers this season.

[sc:MLB240banner ]The Giants’ offense is still struggling to put up runs. They’ve scored a total of 26 runs over their last seven games. However, they’ve managed to get by with some terrific pitching. They’ve given up just two runs or fewer in four of those seven games, all against the Dodgers.

Ryan Vogelsong, tonight’s starter, has had a rough start to his season. After a disastrous first start at Arizona (seven earned runs and four walks in 4.2 innings), he was sent to the bullpen, where he also had a torrid time. In two appearances, he went 5.2 innings and gave up seven runs (five earned) on 14 hits with five walks.

But he looked pretty good upon his return to the rotation on April 23. He limited the Dodgers to two runs – both solo home runs – on six hits in six innings, which continued his uncanny run against Los Angeles. The Giants are 6-1 in the last seven games Vogelsong has started against the Dodgers. He’s also gone at least six innings and has given up two earned runs or fewer in his last four starts against them.

Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly tried to shake things up against the Giants yesterday by dropping lefties Adrian Gonzalez and Joc Pederson from the lineup against Giants ace Madison Bumgarner. But it was to no avail as they were shut down yet again by their division rivals.

After a blisteringly hot start, Gonzalez has fallen back down to earth over the last week. He’s hitting just .240 during that span, dropping his average to a merely mortal .377. Gonzalez will look to regain his Midas touch against Vogelsong. He’s 6-of-30 lifetime against the Giants righty with two home runs.

The Dodgers lineup has struggled against San Fran’s pitching, but Zack Greinke will be eager to return the favor to the Giants batters. Greinke has had a spectacular start to his season. He’s won three of his first four starts, and sports a cool 1.35 ERA, No. 3 in the National League.

Greinke has historically had his way against the Giants. His teams have gone a perfect 7-0 in his seven career starts against them, including five last year. He went 5-0 with a 1.59 ERA and had 36 strikeouts in 34 innings.

Writer’s Prediction

Greinke guides the Dodgers to a 4-2 win.
