Diehard Celtics fans have had many reasons to cheer over the course of their team’s history. They also have a lot of reasons not to cheer when in other places like the Staples Center, teeming with blood thirsty Boston haters. But the Lakers hotbed is far from the only place a Celtics fan should try to conceal their Boston zealotry.
Here are five places a Boston Celtics fan should stay away from:
1. Yankee Stadium
[sc:NBA240banner ]The Celtics are Boston’s basketball team and not exactly rivals of the New York Yankees, but anything or anyone that exudes Bostonian fandom will not escape the discerning eyes of Bronx die-hards.
You’ve heard all about how heated the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is, and it’s so big that it crosses over to other sports. Any Celtics fan who sports a Larry Bird jersey in Yankee Stadium will have to endure at least nine innings of venom directed at him/her.
2. Wells Fargo Center
The peak of the Celtics-76ers rivalry was reached during the 80’s, highlighted by a number of fights, none more infamous than the Larry Bird-Julius Erving choke match. That was two legendary players going at it in the most barbaric of ways on the court. It may have been three decades ago, but that kind of hatred for the Celtics hasn’t been forgotten in Philly.
3. Little Hoolie’s Sports Bar & Grill During Happy Hour
It’s true that Celtics fans might want to watch their backs anywhere in the city that the Heat call home, but this sports bar, packing a whopping 30 TVs for the viewing pleasure of Heat fans from all over Miami, has a happy hour that runs right until 8:00 PM. While that might sound tempting as a tourist, don’t pop in there with your green jersey on while all those Miami fans are jacked up on $3 beers.
4. Just Outside TD Garden
When you’re at your team’s home stadium, your bravery level usually shoots up to unprecedented heights. After all, what’s there to worry about? You’re surrounded by like-minded fans rooting for the same team and living in the same city. But that’s not always the case.
Take for example this poor Celtics fan who got stabbed while walking out of TD Garden after a Celtics-Heat game. If these Heat fans can do this in Boston, you better believe Celtics fans should avoid…
5. American Airlines Arena
Ah, the home of LeBron James and the rest of the Miami Heat – the team whose president is Pat Riley, the coach of the “Showtime” Lakers. The Heat have risen to rival status for the Celtics, due to their recent playoff meetings, often ending up classics, both in the sense of pure basketball as well as on-court animosity. It goes without saying that any Celtics fan should take extra precaution when down in South Beach.
