Betting on the Arizona Diamondbacks (41-26)
The Arizona Diamondbacks are at it again. They’ve now won four games in a row and are 7-1 in their last eight games after two one-run wins over the Detroit Tigers.
Brandon Drury’s streak of consecutive games with a homer ended at three last night, but he still added another hit and RBI to give the D-backs the win. Drury is now 8-of-16 with three homers and seven RBIs over his last five games. Not to be outdone, Paul Goldschmidt is 9-of-19 with two homers and seven RBIs. Goldschmidt is a perfect 2-of-2 with two RBIs against Phillies starter Aaron Nola.
D-backs starter Patrick Corbin could sure use some more run support from his lineup. The lefty has been very shaky over the past month. He’s got an 8.35 ERA over his last seven starts. But he still went 3-3 during that span thanks in large part to the D-backs offense. They put up 15 runs in Corbin’s last start against the San Diego Padres.
Corbin, though, has been hopeless away from home. He’s 0-5 with a 9.00 ERA in his five road starts this season. Since last year, Arizona is 0-10 in Corbin’s last 10 road starts.
Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies (22-43)
The Philadelphia Phillies mercifully ended an eight-game losing skid as they shut out the Boston Red Sox last night to win, 1-0. But even though they won, offense remains a huge problem for the Phils. They’re averaging just 2.3 runs per game over their last nine games.
Phillies starter Aaron Nola knows first-hand how impotent that offense has been. The Phillies scored just seven runs over a stretch of four Nola starts from May to the start of June.
Nola has pitched much better since struggling upon his return from the DL. He pitched an eight-inning, one-run gem against Atlanta, and followed that up with a credible outing (5 IP, 3 ER) in a loss to the Cardinals in his last start.
The Phillies don’t have a great record when Nola starts at home. Since 2016, they’re just 3-8 in 11 Nola starts at Citizens Bank Park.
Writer’s Prediction
The Diamondbacks (+109) deal the Phillies another defeat.
