Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (37-38)
The O’s are in the midst of a rare win streak after claiming the last two games of their three-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays. Baltimore has gone just 6-12 over its last 18 games, winning two games in a row just twice during that span.
Their struggling offense came to life with eight runs apiece in those two wins. However, the O’s are still down in 20th in the majors at 4.59 runs per game.
Starter Kevin Gausman will be hoping for some more run support when he takes the mound. The O’s have scored just six total runs in his last three starts. He hasn’t helped himself, either, as he’s coughed up 19 earned runs in 21.1 innings in four starts this June.
On the bright side, Gausman did show some signs of improvement by giving up just three runs over 5.2 innings in his last start against the Indians. He’ll also be up against the Jays, a team he’s pitched very well against this season. He’s only 1-0, but the O’s are a perfect 3-0 in his starts, with Gausman recording a very solid 2.60 ERA.
Betting on the Toronto Blue Jays (36-39)
The Jays’ quest to get back up to .500 took a big hit after they dropped three games in a row last week. After falling to the Texas Rangers, they dropped two more against the Kansas City Royals. They managed to stave off a series sweep by winning the final game against KC, 8-2. Those eight runs were the most the Jays have scored since they went off for 17 runs against the Cincinnati Reds on May 29.
Jose Bautista continued his recent hot streak by going 2-of-5 with a homer and four RBIs. He’s now 8-of-18 in his last four games. Although he’s just 4-of-21 in his career against Gausman, four other Jays are hitting .313 or better with at least 13 at-bats against the O’s starter.
Toronto starter Joe Biagini will look to get the Jays back on the cusp of .500 with a strong performance against the O’s. Even though he gave up four earned runs (with two homers) in 5.2 innings in his last outing against the Rangers, he finally picked up a decision win after five consecutive losses.
Outside his horrific six-run, one-inning outing against the White Sox, Biagini has actually pitched quite well over the last month or so. He had a stretch of three consecutive quality starts where he gave up just six earned runs in 20 innings, but the Jays were only able to score three runs during those three starts.
Writer’s Prediction
Gausman remains perfect against the Jays as he leads the O’s (+148) to another win.
