After suffering a devastating four-game sweep at the hands of AL West leaders Los Angeles Angels, the Oakland Athletics returned to winning ways last night, defeating the Seattle Mariners 6-1 in a crucial AL West matchup.
[sc:MLB240banner ]The Athletics will look to build on that victory and will send ace Sonny Gray (13-7, 3.03 ERA) to the mound later tonight. He allowed three earned runs on six hits through seven innings in his last outing against the Angels settling for a no-decision.
The Mariners will counter with James Paxton (4-1, 1.83 ERA). The left-hander was solid in his last appearance against the Texas Rangers throwing 6 2/3 shutout innings as he helped lead the Mariners to a comfortable 5-0 win.
The Athletics are 7-3 in their last ten home games while the Mariners are 6-4 in their last ten games on the road. Seattle is 3-2 in their last five games at O.co Coliseum.
Writer’s Prediction
The Athletics (-150) will record back-to-back victories over the Mariners.
Washington Nationals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 PM ET)
Line: Washington Nationals (+180) at Los Angeles Dodgers (-210); total: 6.0 – view all MLB lines
Gio Gonzales finally earned his first victory of the second half last night as he led the Nationals to a tight 6-4 win over the Dodgers in the opening game of their three-game set.
Washington will look to sustain the momentum and will start Doug Fister (12-5, 2.55 ERA) later tonight. The right-hander, however, has lost his last two games, allowing a total of eight earned runs in 11 2/3 innings of work.
He will have to be at his best as he will face the Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (16-3, 1.73 ERA) who is having a spectacular season. After a surprise loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on August 16th, Kershaw has reeled in two straight victories, allowing just one earned run in 16 innings of action.
The Nationals are 6-4 in their last ten away games while the Dodgers are only 4-6 in their last ten home games. The Dodgers, however, are 3-2 in their last five games against the Nationals at Dodger Stadium.
Writer’s Prediction
Kershaw will lead the Dodgers (-210) to an easy win over the Nationals.
