Betting on the Boise State Broncos (+330)
There’s truly no place like home – especially in sports – and Boise State football is proving that year in and year out. Following the 24-13 victory over Troy this past Saturday, the Broncos have now won 16-straight home-openers.
The defense stymied all day long. They only allowed 4.1 yards per throw and had four pass disruptions, while their front seven held the opposition’s running attack to just 2.3 yards per carry and pounded them for nine tackles for loss (TFL). Additionally, the pass-rush also had four sacks.
Sophomore Sam Whitney and freshman Curtis Weaver were the two of the most notable men on the stop unit, with the former having one sack and seven tackles (one was a TFL), and the latter having a pair of sacks and TFLs. These two will be players to watch out for moving forward.
The offense wasn’t able to show off much. Quarterback Brett Rypien underwhelmed and only went 13-for-23 for 160 yards and one pick. He did, however, had a couple of big plays with Cedrick Wilson, who gained 63 total yards in four catches (16.3 per catch). Rypien and his other weapons on the wing should be able to do better in the coming weeks.
Over at the backfield, Alexander Mattison looked efficient, as he ran for 83 yards and a TD on 6.3 yards per carry. Expect him to be the new main man of the Broncos’ ground game.
The Broncos were 4-3 SU and ATS on the road last season.
Betting on the Washington State Cougars (-420)
Shutting out an opponent is always a great to start a season, regardless of how superior you are to the other team.
Washington State did just that over the weekend when they punished Montana State, 31-0, using a balanced offense and defense, which is quite indicative in the score.
The offense, in particular, was superb everywhere. They were in complete control and showed no signs of feeling pressure from defenders, as evidenced in going 10-for-14 in third down situations. Luke Falk appeared to be as relaxed as any quarterback can be. He connected on 33 of his 39 throws for 311 yards and three TDs, with his pass-catching back, James Williams, also providing a good lift, contributing 208 total yards and two TD grabs in just 22 touches (9.4 yards per rush/catch).
Defensively, they only allowed 143 total offense (only 28 passing yards) and made the Bobcats fail to convert on third downs 10 out of 11 times. The front seven also contained the opposing RBs well, and only surrendered 115 yards on 3.6 yards per carry. Star defensive lineman Hercules Mata’fa, who led the team in sacks and TFLs last season, had 1.5 sacks and 2.5 TFLs. He should be on his way to yet another monster campaign.
Dating back to last season, the Wazzu is 6-3 in its last nine games at home (4-5 ATS).
