The Boston Red Sox (+1300 to win the World Series) are still playing catchup in the American League East division, which the New York Yankees (+200) are becoming more and more likely to win. However, the Red Sox will still need to get wins as they are very much in contention for at least a wild card ticket to the postseason. That’s also why this coming four-game series against the Yankees is expected to be a heated and tightly-contested one from start to finish.

GAME 1

Starters: Eduardo Rodriguez (13-4, 4.13 ERA) vs. James Paxton (5-6, 4.72 ERA)

Pitching:

Rodriguez  is definitely enjoying the run support he’s getting from his teammates. Despite a mediocre 4.13 ERA this season, the lefty hurler has not picked up a lost in any of his past five starts. He finished July with a 5-0 record, though, he did register an impressive 2.013 ERA in that stretch. In his last start, he allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of a 9-5 home loss to the Yankees on Jul. 27. Paxton went 0-3 with a 5.68 ERA in five starts last month, and got smoked for seven earned runs (four homers) on nine hits in just 4.0 innings of a 10-5 road loss to the Red Sox on Jul 26. Paxton is 2-3 with a 3.75 ERA in 10 home starts this season.

Hitting

J.D. Martinez is 6-for-13 with a homer in career vs. Paxton.

Didi Gregorius is 11-for-38 in his career vs. Rodriguez.

Prediction: Red Sox wins, 6-4.

GAME 2

Starters: Chris Sale (5-10, 4.26 ERA) vs. Domingo German (13-2, 4.08 ERA)

Pitching:

Sale went 5.1 innings long and allowed six earned runs on five hits in a 9-6 road loss to the Yankees on Jul. 28. He was clearly not at his best during that game, and he seems to be struggling when up against the Bronx Bombers this year, as he is 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA in three starts against New York this 2019 so far. German  went 4-0 with a 4.67 ERA in five starts last July. He’ll look to keep the good times rolling for him against the Red Sox, as he is 6-1 with a 2.13 ERA in eight home appearances this season.

Hitting

Xander Bogaerts is 4-for-5 in career vs. German.

Aaron Hicks is 9-for-30 with two doubles in career vs. Sale.

Prediction: Yankees win, 5-4.

Johnson is set to make his first start since June. He last toed the rubber on Jun. 22, allowing zero runs and four hits in five innings of an 8-7 home loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. Opponents are hitting .349 against him this 2019. The Yankees are 18th in the majors as of this writing with a starters ERA of 4.77.

Hitting

Rafael Devers is batting .320 on the road this season.

Aaron Hicks is 2-for-4 with a homer run in career vs. Johnson.

Prediction: Yankees win, 7-4.

GAME 4

Starters: David Price (7-4, 3.86 ERA) vs. J.A. Happ (8-6, 5.19 ERA)

Pitching:

The Red Sox are 0-4 in Price’s last four starts, though, he was fantastic the last time he faced the Yankees. Price allowed just two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings of an 8-5 win over New York on the road on Jun. 2. He is 4-3 with a 4.13 ERA in 12 road starts this season. Happ went 1-2 with a 5.04 ERA in five starts last July, and while that’s not encouraging, his most recent start against the Red Sox was. Against Boston at home back in May, Happ held the Red Sox down to only a run on three hits in a 4-1 victory. He is 5-6 with a 5.64 ERA in 12 home starts this season.

Hitting

Rafael Devers is 5-of-17 with a homer in career vs. Happ.

Didi Gregorius is 13-for-35 in career vs. Price.
