Game 1: Friday, June 29, 7:10PM EST

Starters: Eduardo Rodriguez (9-2, 3.8 ERA) vs. CC Sabathia (4-3, 3.18 ERA)

Pitching:

For the first time in a long while, Rodriguez was tagged with more than five runs. Rodriguez allowed that many runs on seven hits in four innings of a 7-2 home loss to Seattle on Jun. 23. It was the most he’s allowed since May 5. He can bounce back against the Yankees, whom he held scoreless in five innings of a 5-4 win in the Bronx on May 10. As for Sabathia, the veteran has picked up back-to-back losses and is looking to get a feel-good win. He yielded just an earned run but let the Rays get nine hits in a 2-1 road loss on Jun. 22. The Yankees are 3-1 in his last four home starts against Boston.

Hitting:

  • Didi Gregorius is 7-for-26 with a pair of doubles vs. Rodriguez.
  • Mookie Betts is 10-for-24 with two doubles vs. Sabathia.

Writer’s Prediction:

Boston wins, 6-5.

Game 2 Saturday, June 30, 7:05PM EST

Starters: Chris Sale (7-4, 2.56 ERA) vs. Sonny Gray (5-5, 4.93 ERA)

Pitching:

Sale is manufacturing strikeouts on an insane pace. He’s fanned at least nine hitters in each of his last four starts. That includes the Red Sox’s 5-0 home win over Seattle on Jun. 24 in which the lefty struck out 13 Mariners and allowed zero runs on four hits in seven innings of action. He is 5-4 with a 1.73 ERA in 13 career starts against the Yankees. Gray did not have that kind of a spectacular outing the last time he toed the rubber, allowing four earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts in a 4-0 loss to the Rays on the road on Jun. 23.

Hitting

  • Didi Gregorius is 4-for-11 with a double vs. Sale.
  • Andrew Benintendi is 5-for-9 with a homer vs. Gray.

Writer’s Prediction:

Boston wins, 5-3.

Game 3 Sunday, July 1, 8:08PM EST

Starters: David Price (9-5, 3.66 ERA) vs. Luis Severino (2-4, 5.40 ERA)

Pitching:

Price has allowed three home runs in his last two starts, which could make him look at least a bit prone to the Yankees’ big bats. Nevertheless, he allowed just an earned run on five hits in 6.0 innings of a comfortable 9-1 win at home over the Angels on Jun. 26. Severino, meanwhile, added to his case as among the best pitchers this season with a solid outing on Jun. 26, tossing six scoreless innings and giving up six hits while striking out nine in a 6-0 road win over the Phillies on Jun. 26. He is 7-0 with a 1.83 ERA in nine home starts this year.

Hitting:

  • Didi Gregorius is 12-for-28 with a home run vs. Price.
  • Andrew Benintendi is 9-for-19 with two homers vs. Severino.

Writer’s Prediction:

New York wins, 6-3.

Writer’s Overall Series Prediction

The Red Sox win this overall regular season series against the Yankees, 2-1.
