Betting on the Carolina Panthers (+4)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The Panthers’ quarterback battle between Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield will continue on in the preseason. Carolina head coach Matt Rhule has not completely said who’s winning the battle, so both Darnold and Mayfield have reasons to bring their best stuff into this upcoming preseason game against Washington. The Commanders’ defense in 2021 was gashed for 25.5 points per game and while they beat Carolina in Week 11 of that season, 27-21, Cam Newton was the one still directing the offense from under center for the Panthers. Also, don’t forget about rookie quarterback Matt Corral who is a gamer and could actually play the most snaps in this game. The Panthers’ o-line also got a boost with first-rounder Ikem Ekwonu expected to play a big role in Carolina’s pass protection right away.
The Panthers are 2-1-1 against the spread in their last four games in the preseason.
Betting on the Washington Commanders (-4)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The Commanders tried to get either Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers in the offseason, but they ultimately have to settle with Carson Wentz, who is not a top-tier quarterback but is expected to be better than Taylor Heinicke, at least. However, Wentz is said to be struggling in the training camp, which is definitely good to hear for Washington. Nevertheless, Wentz shouldn’t be seeing a heavy volume of snaps in the preseason, with Heinicke and rookie Sam Howell likely to eat the most number of snaps from under center. It’s Howell that offers the most intrigue in the preseason because unlike Heinicke, the Commanders don’t know for sure what they have in the former North Carolina Tar Heels QB who had over 10,200 passing yards and 92 touchdowns with 23 interceptions while completing 63.8 percent of his pass attempts over his three-year stay in Chapel Hill.
The Under is 8-2 in the Commanders’ last 10 preseason games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Panthers win, 16-13.
