Betting on the Chicago Cubs

Moneyline: -110

The Cubs will look to regroup and right the ship after back-to-back losses to the San Francisco Giants in Bay Area, as the defending World Series champs send John Lackey (9-9, 4.81 ERA) to the mound. Lackey has been a picture of consistency over his last few starts.

The 38-year old righty is 4-0 with a 3.00 ERA in his last four starts. That stretch includes him telling Washington Nationals hitters to sit down on Aug. 5, when he allowed just two earned runs on six hits in five innings of a 7-4 win at home. He’s not pitching at Wrigley Field tonight but the Cubs are 2-0 in Lackey’s last two road starts.

As for the offense, the Cubs must be happy to see Jason Heyward swinging the bat well again. The outfielder is 7-for-20 with a pair of doubles in his last six games.

Betting on the Arizona Diamondbacks

Moneyline: EVEN

Whereas Lackey is winning, Diamondbacks pitcher Taijuan Walker is moving to the opposite direction, as the Diamondbacks have lost in all of his five starts. It’s not exactly all Walker’s fault, though. He’s gone 0-2 with a 4.40 ERA during that stretch but run support has been awful for the 24-year-old hurler, too.

Since the All-Star break, Walker has received just 3.80 runs per nine innings from teammates. Ketel Marte and Paul Goldschmidt are two figures who could address the issue of light production at the plate.

Marte is hitting .400 in his last four games, while Goldy is batting .350 with a homer and five RBI’s in his last five contests. Goldschmidt also has career line of 3-for-8 versus Lackey.

The D’backs are 5-3 in Walker’s past eight home starts.

Writer’s Prediction
