Betting on the Chicago Cubs (53-47)
The streaking Chicago Cubs put yet another win on the board as they took the third game of their four-game set against the White Sox, 8-3. Thanks to a strong outing from starter Jake Arrieta, the defending World Series champs are now 10-2 post-All-Star break.
Jon Lester will look to close out the series with another win tonight. Much like the rest of the Cubs team, the veteran lefty has been on quite a surge since returning for the second half of the season. Lester has given up just three earned runs on six hits over 15 innings in his last two starts, both of which the Cubs won.
Lester is coming off one of his strongest outings of the year as he gave up two runs in eight strong innings and tied a season-high with 10 strikeouts to beat the Cardinals, 3-2.
Betting on the Chicago White Sox (39-59)
The White Sox’s disastrous start to the second half of the season continues. The slumping Sox are now 1-10 post-ASG after last night’s defeat. Once again, the White Sox found runs very hard to come by. They’re averaging less than three runs per game in their 11 games during the second half of the season.
That lack of run support won’t be good news for tonight’s starter, Mike Pelfrey. The veteran right-hander has already failed to help himself this month, as he’s sporting a 6.08 ERA through three starts as well as a disastrous relief appearance.
Pelfrey has given up just one earned run in each of his last two starts. However, he lasted just 4.2 innings against the Mariners, and gave up six walks over five innings in his last start against the Royals.
Writer’s Prediction
The Cubs (-240) continue to roll as they beat the struggling White Sox.
