Betting on the Chicago White Sox (38-57)
Things are going from bad to worse for the reeling White Sox as they succumbed to their ninth consecutive defeat with a harrowing 5-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. It was another disappointing performance by the White Sox who had not lost nine in a row since August 30-September 7, 2013.
With Chicago struggling mightily right now, the pressure is on Miguel Gonzalez (4-9, 4.89 ERA) to deliver a quality start for the White Sox later today. He was superb in his return from the 10-day disabled list, throwing six innings of one-run ball against the Los Angeles Dodgers last Tuesday. The White Sox couldn’t turn Gonzalez’s strong showing into a victory, however, as they suffered a gut-wrenching 1-0 loss. That being said, Gonzalez’s performance was a welcome sight for White Sox fans who are still smarting from the departure of ace Jose Quintana to their crosstown rivals.
The White Sox are 1-7 in their last eight road games.
Betting on the Chicago Cubs (51-46)
Welcome back Kyle Hendricks! The Professor will make his much-anticipated return to the mound in the series opener against the Chicago White Sox later today. Hendricks will be making his first start since June 4 after going to the disabled list with inflammation in his right hand.
He looked sharp, though, in his last start in the minors, throwing five perfect innings for Double-A Tennessee. That performance was enough for manager Joe Maddon to utter the words, “He’s ready to rock and roll.” Last season, Hendricks led all of baseball with a 2.13 ERA. The 27-year-old righty is 4-3 with a 4.09 ERA in 11 starts for the Cubs this season. He’s 2-1 with a 4.18 ERA in six starts at Wrigley Field this campaign.
The Cubs are 3-0 in their last three home games against the White Sox.
Writer’s Prediction
The Cubs pile more misery on the White Sox with a 6-2 win.
