Betting on the Chicago White Sox (39-57)

Moneyline: +175

The White Sox finally snapped their nine-game losing skid with yesterday’s 3-1 win over the Cubs. Starter Miguel Gonzalez gave a very good performance as he went 7.1 innings and gave up just one earned run.

However, Carlos Rodon will be hard-pressed to come up with a similar type of performance. The 24-year-old lefty lasted just 3.2 innings as he gave up five earned runs and four homers in his last start against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Rodon has given up 11 earned runs in nine innings over his last two starts, and has surrendered at least three walks in each of his four starts all season. He also hasn’t been helped by an offense that scored just one run over his last two starts, and one that continues to struggle. The White Sox are averaging just three runs per game post-All-Star break.

Betting on the Chicago Cubs (51-47)

Moneyline: -205

The Cubs dropped their second series opener in a row with yesterday’s defeat to the Cubbies. But despite the setback, they remain one of the hottest teams in the majors post-ASG. They’re 8-2 over their last 10 games.

Veteran right-hander John Lackey will be tasked to get the Cubs back on track and should be a good bet to do just that. After a rough start to the season, Lackey is experiencing his own personal revival in recent starts. He returned from a brief DL stint to throw five innings of one-run ball last time out against the Atlanta Braves. That’s now four quality starts in his last five outings.

However, it should be noted that Lackey has had some unusually bad luck against the White Sox. Since 2006, his teams have gone just 1-9 in 10 starts against the South Siders.

Writer’s Prediction

Lackey and the Cubs (-205) hand the struggling White Sox another loss.
