We finally have a near .500 CPBL baseball team that isn’t called the Rakuten Monkeys. The Chinatrust Brothers are that squad, but both Chinatrust and the Uni-President Lions are finding their groove which heats things up in a league which seemed to have a runaway champion (Rakuten). This makes the Thursday meeting between the two even more highly anticipated, and when you factor in the close 9-8 score from Wednesday (in favor of Chinatrust) bettors are chomping at the bit to make their picks on the winner. Betting on the Chinatrust Brothers (-190)
5-6 Regular Season Record
The Chinatrust Brothers (CTB) almost have an even record as we wind down the first month of professional Taiwanese baseball. This is thanks to a Chinatrust 9-8 win over the Uni-President Lions on Wednesday. Going into the midweek game, Sofa Score polling had 52.16% of votes favoring a win for the visiting team, showing that “experts” were right on two accounts – it would be a close game and Chinatrust would win. Shortstop Yueh Tung-Hua was selected as MVP of the game after putting on a hitting clinic, and largely responsible for the the Brothers boasting a 2-1 record over the Lions so far this season.
Right-hander Liao Yi-Chung will be taking the mound for CTB this Thursday. Going into the game the Brothers are favored with 2/1 odds at Sofa Score, and they have a 0.455 win percentage in their last five games, ranked second best in the CPBL. Vegas odds also like the Brothers in this game, listing them at -190, but the money is coming in fast on this one so expect the line to shift. Check often for updates.
Betting on the Uni-President Lions (+150)
5-7 Regular Season Record
The Uni-President Lions had their hopes of a three game winning streak squashed by Chinatrust on Wednesday but they can hold their heads high as it was a tightly contested affair and they are certainly not long-shots to win this Thursday, especially if pitching staff can contain hot Yueh Tung-Hua and the rest of CTB’s hit squad. Pitcher Pan Wei-Lun (2.667 ERA overall) will start for the Lions. Wei-Lun is a bit of a legend, accumulating a CPBL-record 143 career wins over his 17-year career. However, the veteran has had a rough start to the season, losing his first two starts of 2020 with a 5.10 ERA for the year so far. Not confidence inducing, but he is the best starter on the roster although that’s not saying much for the weakest mound of the CPBL. Regardless, this is the team that handed the Rakuten Monkeys their first two-losses of the season, just a few short days ago.
Writer’s Prediction
The Chinatrust Brothers keep their momentum going into the weekend with a decisive 11-3 win over the Lions.
