Curacao are still winless in the tournament and with a 0-2 slate, they are scraping the bottom in Group C.
What’s more disappointing for Curacao is that they have as much goals as wins, failing to record a goal in the two losses they had to Jamaica (2-0) and El Salvador (0-2). Based on those sorry performances, Curacao are long shots to topple group leader Mexico, though that’s not entirely impossible.
It wasn’t long ago when the side took down Martinique and Jamaica in consecutive fashion during last month Caribbean Cup. In addition, pressure is lighter this time for Curacao, since they’re already out of contention in this tournament. Expect an all-out, nothing-to-lose mentality from this side against a Mexico team that could get tripped up by their own over-confidence.
At -800 to win this match, Mexico is looking fine to close out group play undefeated. But having seen them struggle against Jamaica in a match that ended in a tie on Friday, there could be some of concern for the team.
Nevertheless, Mexico is going up against a lightweight in Curacao , who are missing two key players in captain Cuco Martina and Felitciano Zschusschen for various reasons.
Erick Torres could be given another start by Mexico this Sunday. The forward didn’t score when he got the starting nod against Jamaica but he played well enough for coach Pompilio Paez to consider the Houston Dynamo attacker. Mexico, who opened their campaign with a decisive 3-1 win over El Salvador last Monday, have two wins and a draw in three meeting all-time with Curacao.
