Betting on the Duke Blue Devils (19-3)

Duke got back into the win column, thanks to an 88-66 destruction of the undermanned Notre Dame Fighting Irish at home, and it seems that the Blue Devils will get another patsy to pick on for their next game. St. John is not exactly the type of team that would cause Duke to lose some sleep. St. John’s has lost to sub-150 RPI teams like DePaul and Georgetown, so the Blue Devils should no way lose to the Red Storm. Duke is vastly superior to St. John’s ion offense and also has a deeper talent pool. The Blue Devils, who shot 50 percent against Notre Dame, is second in the nation in scoring with 90.3 points per game and seventh in field goal percentage with a 50.9 clip. Marvin Bagley had one of his worst games in college in the Fighting Irish game, going 4-for-14 for 12 points to go with eight rebounds, but he should find his rhythm this Saturday versus St. John’s, which once allowed Georgetown to score 91 points against its team. Duke is 8-2 SU in its last 10 games against St. John’s.

Betting on the St John’s Red Storm (10-12)

Red Storm head coach Chris Mullin would want it if his team could shoot like him when he was still playing in the NBA. St. John’s is being bogged down by its poor offense that is making just 41.9 percent of its shot from the floor. The Red Storm are scoring only 72.5 points per game, but the bigger problem is their defense, which is going to be subjected to the ultimate acid test against Duke. Although the Red Storm are looking like a deer in the headlight of Duke, St. John’s have shown it is capable of hanging with the best of them. The Red Storm lost by just seven points (78-71) to No. 1 Villanova earlier this month before going down by only six points (88-82) to No. 11 Xavier in the following game. They have also covered the spread more often than not in meetings with the Blue Devil, as the Red Storm are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games against Duke dating back to 2003.

Writer’s Prediction:

Duke wins, 86-73.
