Liverpool will look to get their top-six bid in the Premier League back on track when they take on Manchester City in an immediate rematch later today. The Reds will be seeking to avenge their 3-1 penalty shootout defeat to City in the League Cup final last Sunday.

The Reds may be low on confidence after Sunday’s setback but they will be able to take heart from their superb recent record against City. Jurgen Klopp’s men have not lost their last 12 meetings with City across all competitions (7-5-0) at Anfield . In fact, the Reds have won three of their last four matches against the Citizens, including a resounding 4-1 victory in the Premier League at the Etihad back in November.

Pulling off the victory today will be much harder, though, for the Reds with injuries ravaging their squad as we speak. Martin Skrtel and Joe Allen are both out with hamstring injuries while Dejan Lovren remains a major doubt for tonight with an illness. Lucas Leiva is also out for tonight’s ballgame after picking up a muscle injury in the penalty shootout against City.

With those key personnel out, the onus is on Philippe Coutinho to lead the attack for the Reds. He has more goals against City than any other side (five). Coutinho scored in the corresponding fixture last season, bagging the winner in a pulsating 2-1 victory against City. He will look to inspire a Reds side that has managed just four wins in their last 10 matches.

Liverpool are 2-1-3 in their last six Premier League home matches.

Betting on Manchester City (14-7-5, 47 pts)

Liverpool vs Manchester City Predictions / Odds – March 2016

Manchester City will head to their Premier League clash with Liverpool with momentum on their side after beating the Reds in their League Cup final showdown on Sunday. Deputy goalkeeper Willy Caballero saved three spot-kicks in the penalty shoot-out to help the Citizens capture their fourth League Cup crown.

The decision to rest his stars in the FA Cup match against Chelsea last week has proven to be a masterstroke for manager Manuel Pellegrini as the Citizens have yet to lose since that contest. They bagged an emphatic 3-1 victory against Dynamo Kiev in the first leg of their Champions League tie before winning the League Cup against Liverpool last Sunday.

Manchester City will look to translate that excellent form in the Premier League where they have struggled mightily of late. The Citizens have lost their last two games in the competition, absorbing gut-wrenching home defeats to title rivals Leicester City and Tottenham. If history will repeat itself though, the Citizens are set for a great revival in this tournament.

After their last League Cup triumph two years ago, City stormed to the title with nine wins and only one defeat from their remaining league matches. For that to become a reality once again, they will need Vincent Kompany to be fully healthy for the final stretch. The Citizens have won 10 out of their 15 games this season when Kompany has played and only 15 out of 27 when he has been out.

Manchester City are 2-2-2 in their last six road matches in the Premier League.

Writer’s Prediction

Manchester City and Liverpool cancel each other out in an entertaining 2-2 draw (+200).
