Betting on the Georgetown Hoyas (+8.5)
Record: 10-12 Overall / 7-9 Conference
Georgetown is through the first round of the 2021 Big East tournament after scoring a 68-49 win over the Marquette Golden Eagles on Wednesday. The Hoyas entered the tournament coming off a 75-67 road loss to the UConn Huskies, but Georgetown still looked better of late. The Hoyas have won three of their last four games and five of their last seven. Even though the Hoyas have lost twice to Villanova in the regular season, those two losses had the Wildcats featuring arguably their best player in Collin Gillespie, who is now out for the rest of the season after suffering a serious knee injury. That’s a huge plus for Georgetown which can punish the Wildcats on the offensive glass. Georgetown finished the regular season third in the conference with 11.6 offensive rebounds per game and just had a whopping total of 16 offensive boards in the Marquette game.
Georgetown is 9-3 against the spread in its last 12 games overall. If anything, the under is 6-1 in the Hoyas’ last seven games on a Thursday.
Betting on the Villanova Wildcats (-8.5)
Record: 16-5 Overall / 11-4 Conference
Losing Collin Gillespie for the rest of the season is a tough pill to swallow for Villanova, though that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world for the Wildcats. If there’s one coach who could steer Villanova to success regardless of who’s playing or not, that’s got to be Jay Wright. Villanova, however, looked like it was really missing Gillespie in its 54-52 regular-season final loss on the road to the Providence Friars on Mar. 6. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, who was supposed to lead and carry a heavier load for ‘Nova after Gillespie’s injury only scored 11 points on a salty 5-of-15 shooting against Providence. That being said, he could explode against Georgetown’s defense that’s among the worst in the Big East. Georgetown finished the regular season 10th in the conference with 74.9 points allowed per game.
Villanova is 3-1 against the spread in its last four games after a loss.
Writer’s Prediction
Villanova wins, 74-69.
