Betting on the Golden State Warriors (-10)

Welp… The Golden State Warriors’ first game of the “Big Four” era didn’t really go as planned, huh?

Just about everybody believed that the Warriors would coast through the opening day of the regular season on Tuesday. Instead, they were humbled by the San Antonio Spurs, 129-100, in front of their home fans all the more.

Golden State looked out of sync the whole evening as it was out-rebounded by the Spurs 55-35 (21-8 on the offensive glass), and it only got 15 points from its bench that game. What’s got to be the most concerning statistic, though, is that the Warriors made just seven of their 33 three-point attempts (21.2 percent).

Still, the firepower exhibited by the four main guys of the Dubs is promising enough. Kevin Durant (27 points) Stephen Curry (26), Draymond Green (18) and Klay Thompson (11) each scored in double figures, with Durant and Green each ending with double-doubles.

It appears that the Warriors just need to gel better to execute plays properly, and that could very well happen this Friday in New Orleans. They’ve won nine of the last 10 meetings with the Pelicans (6-3-1 ATS), and you can bet that they’ll play with much more intensity, especially after the loss to the Spurs had left a very sour taste in their mouths.

Betting on the New Orleans Pelicans (+10)

Make no mistake about it: Anthony Davis is a BEAST. Unfortunately for him, his supporting cast is still a sad collection of nobodies, as he and the New Orleans Pelicans fell at home to the Denver Nuggets on Thursday, 107-102.

Davis had mind-boggling numbers that night to say the least; he finished with 50 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, seven steals and four blocks. (side note: ain’t that a fantasy owner’s dream right there?) Yet like his unibrow, Davis stood alone as the only saving grace for the Pelicans. Only second-year point guard Tim Frazier seemed ready to start the regular season on the right foot as he had 15 points, 11 assists and five rebounds.

In turn, the Pels suffered from the lack of contributions from their other players, having collectively shot just 41.3 percent on the floor and having gone 3-of-19 from downtown (15.8 percent). They were even out-rebounded 69-42, and they also failed to capitalize on the 25 turnovers by the Nuggets.

With injuries to Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans still limiting the team’s true potential, it seems as if New Orleans will have another rough start to its campaign. The Pelicans have lost six of their last seven games played in October dating back to the 2012 season (2-5 ATS), and it’s highly likely that the hellbent Warriors will look to keep that gloomy record fittingly going right before Halloween.

Writer’s Prediction

The Warriors (-10) strike back with a vengeance, 127-101.
