Golden State Warriors vs. New York Knicks Predictions, Picks and NBA Preview – January 31, 2016

The Golden State Warriors had a laugher until they allowed the lowly Philadelphia 76ers to rally in the fourth quarter of a 108-105 win. They probably deserved to lose with all the mistakes their three All-Stars made, but Harrison Barnes had other things in mind with a game-winning three-pointer with 0.2 seconds left in the game.

The Warriors now play the second half of a back-to-back against the New York Knicks. Carmelo Anthony is still one special player, barely missing out on a triple double his last time out, while rookie wonder Kristaps Porzingis should remain a solid threat with his skillset.

It’s going to be one hell of a game at Madison Square Garden. Speaking of MSG, it’ll play host to another game earlier today in college basketball’s Villanova vs. St. John’s. Check out the complete preview for that Big East showdown here.

Betting on the Golden State Warriors (43-4)

The Golden State Warriors’ horrible performance at Philadelphia last night might do them good. It could have woken them up to the reality that even the worst teams in the league have a chance to beat them when given the opportunity to. Expect the defending NBA champions to have a much better performance tonight, especially from their trio of All-Stars.

Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green combined to commit 19 of the team’s 23 turnovers against Philadelphia. But they made up for their mistakes with their own contributions. Green barely missed out on a triple-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists. Curry made five three-pointers, while Thompson had a game-high 32 points.

Expect Curry to put on quite a show at Madison Square Garden. He’s had some excellent moments in New York such as scoring a career-high 54 points in 2013 and a triple-double in 2014. He’ll get help from Green, who’s been solid on the road this season averaging 14.2 points, nine rebounds and 7.4 assists per game.

Thompson could also have a big night after scoring a team-high 27 points in 25 minutes in his previous game against the Knicks in March 2015. He’s been incredibly hot recently, scoring a combined 77 points in his last two games. Having Thompson sharp, while Curry and Green do their thing could have the Warriors en route to a blowout victory.

The Warriors are 4-1 ATS in their last five trips to New York.

Betting on the New York Knicks (23-26)

Golden State Warriors vs New York Knicks Predictions and Preview

The New York Knicks stopped a four-game slide with a 102-84 victory over the Phoenix Suns at home on Friday night. Carmelo Anthony was the court general the team needed him to be with 19 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in his return from a two-game absence. He missed out on both outings against Golden State last season, a 106-92 defeat at home in February and a 125-94 drubbing on the road in March.

Expect Anthony to have a solid outing tonight. He’s been highly-efficient against Western Conference opponents recently, averaging 21.7 points, seven rebounds and 7.7 assists in the last three of such matchups. All three were contested at home.

Anthony can count on rookie Kristaps Porzingis for some support. Porzingis has played much better at home than on the road, averaging 14.8 points on 45 percent shooting. The Latvian big-man has the ability to stretch the floor, either by scoring in the paint or getting hot from three-point range. He’s shooting 38 percent from three-point range in his last four outings.

Porzingis has also been notorious for his putback dunks. He has an opportunity to get some monster jams against the league’s best team tonight. The Warriors are allowing 11.9 offensive rebounds per game to their opponents, the second-most in the NBA.

The Knicks have lost their last seven as underdogs of eight or more, but are 5-2 ATS in those games.

Writer’s Prediction

The Knicks give Golden State another score, but end up losing. New York covers +10.
