Betting on the USC Trojans:

The Trojans rid themselves of long beleaguered head coach, Lane Kiffin, and judging from the result of their first game without him, they should have made that move earlier.

Interim coach Ed Orgeron won his first game at the helm of Southern California’s football squad when his team fended off Arizona, 38-31. Harnessing the fresh air of change, Cody Kessler threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns to bring the Trojans back to the winning column after getting blasted by Arizona State in Week 5, 62-41. It was the final straw for Kiffin who got fired after that loss, but at the same time also offered clues that the Trojans’ defense are starting to have some cracks.

Ranked 42nd nationally in point allowed, USC have had two consecutive games wherein they gave up 31 or more points after just surrendering an average of 15.25 points in their first four games. Orgeron  must find a way to solve his team’s defensive lapses if he plans to shell the interim tag on his title and become USC’s long time coach.

The Trojans have been dominating their rivals recently going 8-2 SU in their last 10 games against Notre Dame, including a five-game winning streak in South Bend in their last five trips there. Against the spread on the road, USC is doing its very best to red flag themselves in the eyes of bettors. They are 0-8 ATS in their last 8 road games.

Betting on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish:

Tommy Rees, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, NCAA Football

Six games into the season, Notre Dame is still inconsistent and by now, fans should have stopped hoping for the team to have the same result as last season’s where the Fighting Irish went undefeated until the BCS National Championship.

Combined, both programs have produced the most national titles (22), Heisman trophy winners (14), All-Americans, College Football Hall of Famers and future NFL Hall of Famers (21) of any college football rivalry series. They are tied for the highest number of players taken in the NFL Draft of any school (479).

Still, the Fighting Irish recorded a much-needed win against the Arizona State Sun Devils before heading into their bye-week. Tommy Reese threw for 279 yards and connected for three touchdowns to lead Notre Dame past the Sun Devils, 37-24. The victory followed a disappointing 35-21 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners, where Reese threw three picks, allowing the Sooners to score 21 points off those mistakes.

The offensive line is so far doing a solid job of protecting Reese from getting smashed by the enemies’ defense, placing eighth place in the nation in pass protection allowing just four sacks so far.

It’s the Fighting Irish’s defense though that needs a spark. Their defense was pierced through for at least 34 points in three games. The 25.5 points they allow per game is just 58th nationally. Neither are they good at forcing turnovers, too, only having seven takeaways in the season, 86th in the nation.

Notre Dame is 8-2 SU in its last 10 home games. Overall, the Fighting Irish went 4-1 OVER in their last five games.
