Betting on the Green Bay Packers (odds)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The Packers don’t have a lack of motivation to show up on Friday and beat San Francisco. After all, it was the Niners who sent Green Bay home in last season’s NFC divisional round. For this game, though, Aaron Rodgers will likely be more of just a spectator, with his backup, Jordan Love, picking up most of the snaps from under center together with third-stringer Danny Etling. Last season, Love appeared in just six games and recorded 411 passing yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions overall, while also completing 58.1 percent of pass attempts. With wide receiver Davante Adams gone as well as wideout Marquez Valdez-Scantling in Green Bay, the Packers are looking for others to step up downfield. New addition Sammy Watkins is expected to start along with Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb in the regular season, but that’s a pretty slim starting WR unit for Green Bay, so there might be more focus in this preseason game on what the Packers could do on the ground, where the team also need to improve after averaging 109.3 rushing yards per game in 2021.
The Over is 7-3 in the Packers’ last 10 games in the preseason.
Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (odds)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The keys to the 49ers’ quarterbacking gig are now in the hands of Trey Lance, with San Francisco and Jimmy Garoppolo on the verge of parting ways. Like Jordan Love, Lance saw little action in his rookie season. In 2021, Lance appeared in just six games (two starts) and passed for only 603 yards, though he did have five touchdown passes and a pair of interceptions while connecting on 57.7 percent of his pass attempts. He’s also got some wheels under him, having rushed for 168 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries. Apart from Lance, the 49ers can use the preseason games to see more of what they have on the other positions on offense. The running back room has Elijah Mitchell and Jeff Wilson as top two, but rookie Trion Davis-Price offer some intrigue in San Francisco’s rushing offense that averaged 124.6 yards in 2021 – seventh-most in the NFL.
The 49ers are 4-3 against the spread in their last seven preseason games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Packers win, 21-17.
