Betting on the Houston Astros (58-27)
The Astros pounded the Atlanta Braves in their quick, two-game series. Combining the scores of the two contests, Houston outscored Atlanta by 18 runs (26-8).
There’s an array of potent hitters in Houston, so an injury to one of its best, Carlos Correa (thumb), isn’t a big problem. Yuli Gurriel has been on a roll in the past week, and he should be able to continue the great stretch, especially with Correa possibly sitting out another game. He’s a scorching 11-for-18 in his last four games, with two homers, 10 RBIs, and five runs.
Gurriel deserves a big spotlight now, thanks to his recent production, but Jose Altuve and George Springer, among others, will remain as the more dangerous threats.
Lance McCullers Jr. (7-1 with a 2.69 ERA in 15 starts) is the projected starter on the mound for tomorrow. The second-year hurler has only allowed five runs on 12 hits and four walks in his last three games (17.1 innings), while also tallying 22 Ks.
Betting on the Toronto Blue Jays (39-45)
The Blue Jays will be coming off back-to-back Ws, as they recorded a pair of different-themed victories over division rival New York Yankees. After a comfortable 4-1 win on Monday, they sweated out a 7-6 edging on Tuesday night.
With former American League Most Valuable Player Josh Donaldson failing to get out of his ugly funk (1-for-26 in his last eight), Jose Bautista and Justin Smoak will be heading to tomorrow’s game as the Blue Jays’ hottest hitters – Joey Bats is batting at .461 in the past week, while Smoak, a.k.a “The Freak from Goose Creek,” is 8-for-20 in his last six, with two dingers, six RBIs, and three runs.
The 11-year veteran, Fransico Liriano, is scheduled to open the pitching for the Jays. He’s 4-4 with a lowly 5.66 ERA in 13 starts this season, but the Astros’ current roster is only a decent 17-for-62 (.274) against him all-time.
Writer’s Prediction
The Astros (-160) win it, 9-4.
