Team Strengths

The defending American Athletic Conference champions are poised to win it again this year. Priced at +7,000 to win the national title, the Cougars have every confidence on quarterback Greg Ward Jr. to lead their offense back to its terrific form last season. In 2015, the Cougars ranked first in the conference in scoring offense (40.4 points per game) and fourth in total offense (484.1 total yards per game). Speaking of Ward, the dual-threat quarterback was one of the only two players last season with at least 2,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards.

Team Weaknesses

The defense took some blows over the offseason. The Cougars saw four defensive backs graduate, most notable William Jackson III and Elandon Roberts. Roberts was the team’s top tackler last year with 142. Those losses will almost surely be felt by the Cougars’ stop unit that impressed last season, when Houston allowed just 20.5 points per game—good for 16^th overall in the FBS.
