Betting on the Houston Rockets (61-14)
The Rockets are simply unstoppable this late in the season. For them to be better at this point of the season than Golden State Warriors speaks a lot about how good Houston is. Among the many teams Houston has taken to the woodshed this season is San Antonio. The Rockets have won all of their last three matchups so far this season with San Antonio. In addition, they have also covered the spread in each of those meetings, including their dominant 109-93 win as an 11.5-point favorite in San Antonio on Mar. 12. Whether James Harden will play or will sit this upcoming Spurs game to rest, the Rockets still have plenty of weapons to stay competitive in this contest. Chris Paul has averaged 18.7 points in this regular-season series, while Gerald Green has scored 14.5 points in the two games he played in against San Antonio. Houston is averaging 111.7 points in Spurs games this season.
Betting on the San Antonio Spurs (44-32)
San Antonio may or may not make the playoffs, but you can expect Gregg Popovich to prepare his team for this matchup with Houston well. San Antonio, of course, will not have Kawhi Leonard, who remains out with a quad injury, but there’s also a likelihood that LaMarcus Aldridge won’t play after suffering a knee contusion in a loss to the Wizards on Tuesday. If Aldridge can’t give it a go, Pau Gasol and Rudy Gay will be asked to step up to fill in Aldridge’s void in the middle. Gasol, however, has averaged only 4.7 points and 5.0 rebounds against the Rockets this season, while Gay has put up 10.0 points and pulled down 6.5 boards. Bryn Forbes, meanwhile, has played in all three previous matchups with the Spurs and averaged 12.0 points on 47.8 percent shooting from the floor. The key for the Spurs is their defense that is tops in the NBA with only 99.4 points surrendered per outing.
Writer’s Prediction:
Houston wins, 107-100
