Betting on the Iowa Hawkeyes (-13.5)
Losing to FCS team North Dakota State, 23-21, last Saturday was a reality check for Iowa. The Hawkeyes went 12-2 last year and almost made it to the College Football Playoff, but the loss to NDSU served as a wakeup call for Iowa, who next face a lightweight in Rutgers. Iowa is 5-1 SU and ATS in its last six games as the road team. The offense didn’t look good for Iowa against NDSU. Quarterback C.J. Beathard had a hard time directing the attack, completing 11 of 22 passes for just 152 yards, though he had three touchdowns with an interception. Beathard, however, should have his way against Rutgers’ struggling defense that allowed 21 first-quarter points to New Mexico last Saturday.
Beathard aside, senior running back LeShun Daniels is also eyeing to recover from a measly performance against NDSU, wherein he only managed 29 rushing yards. Daniels, who had 112 rushing yards in the previous game against Iowa State, is primed for another huge Saturday against a mediocre Rutgers’ D against the run, one that has allowed 192.0 rushing yards per game.
Betting on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (+13.5)
The Scarlet Knights are developing a habit of coming back from huge deficits and winning ball games. After recovering from a 14-point hole against Howard last week, Rutgers once again came back from the dead on Saturday, erasing New Mexico’s 21-point first quarter lead for a 37-28 win.
That being said, Rutgers can’t afford to get behind big and early against a team like Iowa. Momentum is on the side of the Scarlet Knights, having won back to back. Moreover, Iowa is coming off a bad loss to an FCS team, which should pump some needed confidence into the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers’ offense features a couple of dynamic wide receivers in Robert Martin and Janarion Grant, who have combined for 395 receiving yards and four touchdowns thus far this season. Grant poses a threat to Iowa with the senior wideout showing he’s capable of shocking defenses with huge plays when he passed for a touchdown and scored on a 69-yard punt return in the New Mexico game.
Also going Rutgers’ way as far as covering the spread is concerned is Iowa’s bad 1-6 ATS record in its last seven games that it was favored by at least eight points.
