Betting on the Kansas City Chiefs (0-0)
Patrick Mahomes showed that video-game numbers are possible in the NFL. Now, he will have to prove that there’s more to his ability to put up stats — that he can lead the Chiefs to the Super Bowl. Mahomes was a walking stats-machine in 2018, passing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns with only 12 interceptions. The Chiefs lost running back Kareem Hunt due to off-the-field issues, but they must be thankful that they are able to hold on to wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who also walked the suspension tightrope. The Chiefs will still be a threat on the ground with Damien Williams ascending to the No. 1 running back role plus the addition of LeSean McCoy, who reunites with former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid. McCoy’s familiarity with Reid’s system is a big plus for the Chiefs, who will look to take advantage of Jacksonville’s defense that ranked just 20th last season against the run. Defensively, the Chiefs lost talent on their stop unit, but there are also newcomers like Tyran Matthieu, Alex Okafor, and Emmanuel Ogbah.
The over is 9-1 in the Chiefs’ last 10 road games.
Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (0-0)
The Jaguars have a Super Bowl-winning quarterback to handle their passing attack this season and that is Philadelphia folk hero, Nick Foles. After parting ways with Blake Bortles, the Jags signed a four-year deal with the Jags, who had a putrid offense in 2018 in which they averaged just 15.3 points per game. Their defense was good, but not enough to cover the lack of the offense’s punch. That doesn’t mean the Jags don’t have anyone outside of Foles who can deal blows. For one, they still have running back Leonard Fournette, who is hoping to bounce back after playing just eight games last year. Fournette’s health is always a question mark, having played just 21 games over the last two seasons. Foles will have quality talents to throw at downfield, including Dede Westbrook, DJ Chark, Keelan Cole and Chris Conley. The Jags also have Marqis Lee, but the wideout’s status for Week 1 is currently up in the air due to a knee problem. Westbrook led the team last year with 717 receiving yards and a touchdown. The Jaguars’ offense has to step up after the team lost some key pieces on defense, but at least the potent pass rush is still there with Calais Campbell and Yannick Ngakoue remaining in Jacksonville. They need to be on top of their game against Mahomes and the Chiefs.
The under is 4-0 in the Jags’ last four home games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Chiefs win, 28-21.
