Betting on the Kansas City Royals (7-11)
Kansas City’s losing woes show no sign of abating as the Royals suffered a tough 5-2 defeat to the Texas Rangers on Sunday. The Royals simply had no answer for Yu Darvish who pitched eight innings of two-run ball. It was another disappointing defeat for the Royals who have now lost each of their last four games. With the loss, Kansas City dropped to the bottom of the AL Central standings with a dismal 7-11 record.
The Royals will look to return to the win column when they face the Chicago White Sox in the opening game of their three-game set tonight. Starting for Kansas City in this series opener is Jason Vargas. The left-hander has been the most effective starter in a strong Kansas City rotation, winning each of his first three starts while posting a ridiculous 0.44 ERA and surrendering only one run in 20.2 innings. Vargas has thrown 14.2 shutout innings over his past two starts.
Vargas can’t do it all alone, though, and he needs the Royals hitters to contribute on the offensive end as well. Expected to lead Kansas City in that department are Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain. Moustakas leads the Royals not only in homers (6) but also in RBIs (9) this season. Cain, on the other hand, leads Kansas City in batting average (.333), hits (20) and on-base percentage (.452). He is 3-of-9 (.333) in his career against White Sox starter Miguel Gonzalez with a homer and one RBI. Cain got a day off in Sunday’s loss to Texas.
The Royals are 0-5 in their last five road games.
Betting on the Chicago White Sox (8-9)
The Chicago White Sox finally snapped their three-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday. Derek Holland was simply sensational for the White Sox, allowing just one run on three hits in six innings of action. He struck out six batters to lower his earned run average to 1.99.
The White Sox will look to keep the momentum going when they face the Kansas City Royals in their series opener tonight. Starting for Chicago in this ballgame is Miguel Gonzalez (2-0, 2.84 ERA). The right-hander pitched a gem at Yankee Stadium in his last start, allowing just one earned run over 8.1 innings on 88 pitches. Gonzalez now has a 7-4 record with a 4.35 ERA over 18 career starts in March and April. He will be licking his chops at the prospect of facing a Kansas City side that has just scored a majors-low 46 runs this season. The Royals managed just five runs in 40 innings in the series loss to Texas.
The White Sox are 3-7 in their last 10 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
