Betting on the Kansas City Royals
Just when things were looking up for Jason Hammel, the pitcher fell back to earth. Hammel (4-7, 5.08 ERA) was rocked in his last start, getting tagged with six earned runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings of a 10-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins on July 1. That was a big letdown for Hammel, who went 3-0 with a 2.51 ERA in the five starts prior to the battering he received from the Twins.
A chance to right the ship anew comes tonight for Hammel, as the Royals look to extend a four-game win streak that includes a three-game road sweep of the Seattle Mariners. The Royals outscored the M’s in that series, 19-10, and hope that the same kind of offense shows up in the series opener in LA. The Royals are currently third in the American League this month in runs (41) and fourth in batting average (.283).
Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers
Kenta Maeda has a prolific Dodgers’ offense to thank for his 6-4 record despite a mediocre 4.56 ERA in 15 total game appearances (13 starts) this year.
The Dodgers’ fear-inducing lineup has supplied Maeda with 6.75 worth of run support per nine innings so far this season. The Dodgers’ hitters, however, weren’t able to rescue Maeda in his last start in which the right-hander lasted just 3.2 innings after allowing five earned runs on hits in a 5-3 road loss to the San Diego Padres on July 2. That said, the Dodgers are 4-1 in Maeda’s last five starts overall. Moreover, Maeda is 4-1 with a 3.27 ERA in eight games (six starts) at home this season.
Logan Forsythe and Justin Turner might continue their exploits at the plate later tonight with the Dodger Stadium seemingly has become a Waterloo of sorts for Hammel. The Royals pitcher is just 0-5 with a 5.35 ERA in six career starts in Chavez Ravine.
Writer’s Prediction
