Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (-11)
Regular Season Record: 8-6
The Chargers failed to extend their win streak to three games as they fell prey to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15 at home, 34-28. Nevertheless, that was a gallant stand by Justin Herbert and company against a Kansas City team whose defense had allowed just nine points in each of its previous three games. Herbert should have fewer problems dissecting Houston’s poor defense that is 29th in the NFL with 26.6 points allowed per contest. The Texans are also 28th overall with nearly 380 total yards surrendered per game. Los Angeles, meanwhile, carries an offense that is ranked seventh with 27.1 points per outing.
The Chargers have covered the spread in two of their last three games, with the total hitting the over in all those contests as well.
Betting on the Houston Texans (+11)
Regular Season Record: 3-11
Houston has already been eliminated from playoff contention, but the Texans have something to feel good about after scoring a 30-16 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road in Week 15. Davis Mills was decent in that game, passing for 209 yards and two touchdowns with an interception on 19/30 completions. Brandin Cooks, meanwhile, finished with 102 receiving yards and two touchdowns on seven catches. The win over the Jags stopped the bleeding of Houston that previously lost three games in a row, a stretch that included an embarrassing 31-0 home loss to the Indianapolis Colts back in Week 13.
The Texans, who are averaging 14.8 points per game and rank fifth in defensive interception rate, are 4-6 against the spread in their last 10 outings. The under is 6-4 in their last 10.
Writer’s Prediction
The Chargers win, 30-14.
