Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (+6.5)
Regular Season Record: 1-1
The Chargers doomed themselves in Week 2’s 20-17 home loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Los Angeles has been known in recent seasons for being a team that often shoots itself in the foot with turnovers and penalties, and those manifested again in the Cowboys game where the Chargers committed two turnovers and got flagged 12 times for 99 yards. The good news for the Chargers is that those can be cleaned in a week. Justin Herbert threw for 338 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions on 31/41 completions. With the brittleness of the Chiefs’ defense, Herbert could be due for a great day at Arrowhead Stadium this coming weekend. It could be remembered that Herbert had 302 passing yards and three touchdowns without an interception on 22/31 completions in last season’s 38-21 win in Kansas City.
The Chargers are 5-1 against the spread in their last six games overall.
Betting on the Kansas City Chiefs (-6.5)
Regular Season Record: 1-1
Other teams would have gone 0-2 to start the season with the kind of defense the Chiefs have shown so far. But the Chiefs are 1-1 because they have the offense to make up for their shortcomings on the other end of the field. Kansas City had to come from behind in Week 1’s 33-29 home win over the Cleveland Browns then lost to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2, 36-35. If the Chiefs continue to struggle on defense in Week 3 and the game turns into a shootout, Patrick Mahomes and company should have the edge. Mahomes is just on another level, almost like the Stephen Curry version of the NFL. He now has 680 passing yards and six touchdowns against just an interception in two games, while completing 76.1 percent of his passes. Also look for the Chiefs’ rushing attack, with running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire licking his chops over the prospect of facing LA’s defense that allowed Dallas to produce 198 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
The Chiefs are 10-1 against the spread in their last 11 games in Week 3.
Writer’s Prediction
The Chiefs win, 28-24.
