Los Angeles Chargers vs New York Jets Predictions, Picks, Odds and Betting Preview – NFL Week 16 2017

The Los Angeles Chargers opened as 7-points favorites on the road on TopBet’s NFL odds board with the total set at 42.5. The Chargers dropped to a record of 7-7 straight up and 7-6-1 against the spread (ATS) after their 30-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday night in Week 15.

The Jets are coming off of a game against the Saints where they covered as 16.5-point underdogs, despite an uninspired performance by QB Bryce Petty. The game left the Jets with a 5-9 SU record, but improved their ATS stats to 8-5-1.

Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (7-7)

Point Spread: (-7)

The Chargers were so hot and the Chiefs were so cold that the road Chargers were one-point favorites at Arrowhead. They looked like they may hold up early in the second half with a 13–10 lead but the Chiefs seized control of the line of scrimmage and Kareem Hunt had his way to lead the Chiefs back to a 30–13 win. Phillip Rivers took two sacks and threw three interceptions in the letdown performance. He had been gaining a little steam in the MVP race with Carson Wentz’s injury and the Chargers’ fantastic run to get back into the playoff picture. That campaign looks dead now.

The Chiefs finish with the Dolphins and Broncos so their one-game lead in the AFC West should hold up (they also hold the tiebreaker over LA). That means the Chargers’ opportunity is likely in the Wild Card, where they have to leap over at least two teams that are currently 8–6 and in second-place in their division. Those teams are the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens.

The Ravens look legit and finish with an easy schedule. The Titans and Bills are who LA has to beat out. Tennessee is pretty terrible and just lost to the 49ers to leave the door open. They finish with the LA Rams and the Jaguars. The Bills have a game with New England this week and then with Miami in Week 17. Vegas and everybody else who watches just a little bit of football would agree that the Chargers are much better than the Titans and Bills. If they take care of business this week and the next, they may just sneak in.

Betting on the New York Jets (5-9)

Point Spread: (+7)

The Jets’ season stayed entertaining and relevant longer than most everybody thought it would. They have lost four of their last five, plus their quarterback Josh McCown and now everybody is just focused on draft positioning.

There’s a lot of speculation the Jets will take a QB in the first round of next year’s NFL Draft. They’ve tried the middling picks and now there’s some pressure to get somebody with some serious pedigree. Bryce Petty is clearly not the answer; he went 19-for-39 with 179 yards last week against the Saints.

It makes you wonder how bad Christian Hackenberg really is that Todd Bowles won’t even give him a look. Meanwhile, the disobedient Mo Wilkerson didn’t play last week because he can’t seem to show up to a meeting on time. It feels like he could be done for the season, as Bowles seems to be through with his immensely talented but unserious defensive tackle. Bowles’ future isn’t certain either but a report has come out this week saying the Jets’ players are behind their coach.

Writer’s Prediction

The Chargers need this and Bryce Petty isn’t doing anything to stop them this week. Pick: Los Angeles Chargers (-7.0)
