Betting on the Los Angeles Rams (+13.5)
The losses just keep on piling for the Los Angeles Rams as they suffered an embarrassing 49-21 defeat to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. The Rams’ feeble defense had a tough time stopping Drew Brees who passed for 310 yards and four touchdowns. Also wreaking havoc against the Rams on Sunday was Mark Ingram who ran for 146 yards and a pair of scores. It was another disappointing result for the Rams who have now lost six of their last seven games, including each of their last two.
It’s paramount for the Rams that they sort out their defense ahead of their weekend clash with the Patriots. The Saints ran riot against the Rams’ D on Sunday, posting a whopping 555 yards from scrimmage. That’s quite a surprise considering the Rams’ defense surrendered an NFL-low 253 yards per game from Weeks 7-11. They will need to rediscover that defensive form fast if they are to upset a New England side that is sixth in the league in total offense, averaging 386.2 yards per game this season.
With Brady and the rest of the Patriots playing some excellent football right now, the onus is on rookie Jared Goff to deliver a solid performance this coming Sunday. He was one of the few bright spots for the Rams in Week 12, completing 20 of 32 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns. LA’s No. 1 overall pick had his fair share of mistakes in that game, though, throwing an interception and losing a fumble on a sack in that loss to the Saints.
The Rams are 3-3 ATS on the road this season.
Betting on the New England Patriots (-13.5)
The New England Patriots will head to their crunch showdown with the Los Angeles Rams with momentum on their side after beating the New York Jets, 22-17, on Sunday. It was a morale-boosting victory for the Pats who extended their winning streak to two games. With the win, New England (9-2) remained two games in front of the hard-charging Miami Dolphins in the AFC East title race with just five games remaining this season.
Leading the way for the Patriots in their Week 12 win was Tom Brady. Playing with an injured knee, the four-time Super Bowl champion tied Peyton Manning for most wins (200) by a quarterback in NFL history. Brady completed 30 of 50 passes for 286 yards and a pair of touchdowns on Sunday to improve to 22-6 in regular-season games against the Jets. Benefiting from Brady’s solid play was Malcolm Mitchell. He caught five passes for 42 yards and two scores, including the game-winning touchdown with under two minutes left.
The Patriots will need more of the same efficiency from Brady if they are to beat the Rams this coming Sunday. Apart from Brady making big plays on the offensive end, New England will also need its defense to be relentless against Los Angeles. The Patriots held the Jets to just 333 total yards on Sunday. They are third in the NFL in scoring defense, allowing a measly 17.9 points per game this season. New England needs that defense now more than ever with Rob Gronkowski a major doubt for this weekend’s clash because of a back injury.
The Patriots are 3-2 ATS at home this season.
Writer’s Prediction
