Betting on the Los Angeles Rams (+7)
Jared Goff didn’t impress in his NFL debut against the visiting Dolphins on Sunday, going 17-of-31 for just 134 yards in a game where the LA defense excelled for the most part.
The Rams held the visitors without a touchdown through three periods and for the first half of the fourth quarter. But they succumbed in the final minutes, allowing Miami to come back and steal the game with two late scores.
Todd Gurley delivered LA’s only touchdown, which came in the opening period. The offense relied on him heavily, as Goff played it safe, refusing to hurl any deep passes downfield. That likely won’t be the case again, though, against a porous New Orleans secondary this coming Sunday.
Goff should be able to connect with his top two receivers in Kenny Britt and Brian Quick for some big gains. Both lead the team in receiving yards with 693 and 421, respectively, including three touchdowns apiece.
Los Angeles is 3-2 SU and ATS in its last five road games.
Betting on the New Orleans Saints (-7)
Drew Brees almost bailed out the Saints on Thursday night against the Panthers. He rallied his team back in the fourth quarter with a pair of touchdown passes to Brandon Coleman and Coby Fleener, putting them just a field-goal kick away from evening things up at 23 apiece.
The defense, however, failed to answer the call down the stretch, as Carolina managed to milk the clock before giving the ball back to the Saints. Brees, who finished the game with 285 passing yards and one interception, only had 14 seconds left to work with in his final drive.
New Orleans also lost the game because of turnovers. Brees has put his club in tougher situations with four picks in the last three games, while the special team continues to look like choke artists.
A trip back home, where the Saints are 2-3 SU and ATS in the last five games, could be what they need to bounce back and snap their three-game slide. It’ll be easier said than done against a vaunted Rams defense that’s yielding 318.3 total yards and 18.7 points this season.
The Saints might also miss the services of their top rusher Mark Ingram, who suffered a concussion versus the Panthers.
