Betting on the Los Angeles Rams (-2.5)

NFL-Preseason-250x130-7-27-16

A new season comes a new home as well for the now Los Angeles Rams, who will actually begin Week 1 with a road contest still within the confines of California this Monday as they visit the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara.

The Rams had a rather pleasant campaign last year, seeing rookie running back Todd Gurley (1,106 rushing yards and 10 TDs in just 13 games) rise to stardom instantly to give them a ton of promise this 2016. Their defense led by monstrous defensive linemen in Robert Quinn and Aaron Donald who combined for 16 sacks and three forced fumbles last season, is as imposing as they come as well.

But perhaps Los Angeles’ perennial problem will still haunt them all season long: the quarterback position. After first-overall pick Jared Goff showed little to no progression in the offseason, the team is left with fifth-year QB Case Keenum (15-9 career TD-interception ratio) manning the ship, and that is as much of a concern heading into Monday night as it is this entire year.

Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (+2.5)

Even though the Rams don’t possess a lethal passing attack, maybe Todd Gurley will be enough to lead them to victory this Sunday. After all, the San Francisco 49ers, who once had a much-feared defense, just gave up the most rushing TDs (20) and the fourth-most rushing yards (126.3 per game) to their opponents last season, and put little to no effort in fixing that problem this offseason.

In fact, the Niners really didn’t do much at all during the downtime other than hire once-coveted head coach Chip Kelly in hopes of turning this dysfunctional team around. They’re now even plagued with Colin Kaepernick’s off-field, politically-aware antics whilst having to settle for the middling Blaine Gabbert as the their starting QB, not to mention all the turmoil going on within the team’s organization itself.

If there’s one bright spot on this San Francisco team, though, it’s got to be Carlos Hyde. The third-year back, who averaged 4.1 yards per carry in his maiden professional campaign, is a great fit for the run-heavy 49ers. Then again, Hyde missed most of the second half of last season with an injury, and there’s no telling this moment that he can out-pace Los Angeles’ Gurley in a foot race this Monday given how inept his team’s offensive line has been at create lanes for him last year.

Writer’s Prediction

The Rams (-2.5) sloppily win their season opener, 17-12.
