Betting on Madison Keys (-500)
On Monday, World No. 9 Madison Keys proved just how dominant she can be once more at the All England Club, as she needed just a little over an hour to eliminate Germany’s Laura Siegemund in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) during the first round of Wimbledon 2016. The American righty easily put in 79 percent of her first serves in play against Siegemund and won the battle of the aces as well, 6-0.
With the victory, Keys has now won all six of her last outings on grass – a stretch that includes her title-winning run at Queen’s Club a couple of weeks ago. She now sports a record of 23-6 on the verdant surface since 2013, counting her career-best quarter-final finish at Wimbledon last season.Wednesday’s matchup isn’t the first time this year that the Illinois native will face Kirsten Flipkens on the opposite end of the court. These two met this March at the Miami Open, with Keys handily winning the bout 6-2, 6-1 (and that match was even played on clay too, not grass).
Having said that, don’t expect Keys to tank in her second-round date with Flipkens given her overall form and momentum. And while this offer is still on the table, it also wouldn’t hurt to place your wager on Keys to win the entire tournament at the cool price of +2,000.
Betting on Kirsten Flipkens (+350)
Kirsten Flipkens had a very similar result as Keys this past Monday in her first-round match at Wimbledon. The World No. 51’s contest versus US-born Monica Gibbs coincidentally ended at 6-3, 6-1 as well, with Flipkens on the winning end of the decision by going 19-of-22 (86 percent)in her chances at net points, and 79 percent of her opportunities for points on first serve.
We mentioned earlier that Keys has a win over Flipkens already. However, the 30-year-old tour veteran was actually the one who dealt the first blow back in 2013 in Brussels, with her prevailing victorious in three sets.
But still, Flipkens’ consistency (or lack of it) this season has been maddening. She was quite the tease at Mallorca two weeks ago when she shockingly upset World No. 2 Garbine Muguruza in straight sets to ultimately land a respectable semi-final finish. What’s more concerning, though, is that Flipkens also lost four-consecutive first-round matches in the tournaments prior to her unexpected run in Spain.
Simply put: Keys is the better pick in Wednesday’s matchup given her overall form and momentum, so you shouldn’t be dazzled by Flipkens’ lukewarm results that easily.
