How the glove size change has altered the odds
Critics will say that something drastic needed to happen because Conor McGregor was sinking quickly in the odds. So both fighters approached the Nevada State Commission to change the required gloves sizes for the match ahead from 10 ounces to eight, which greatly benefits both TMT and the Irishman in different ways. Why did they do it? Well, you could argue the press tour did more harm than good. You could also argue that maybe the pay-per-view numbers haven’t met their marks just yet. The bottom line, though, is that thanks to their request, this fight has now gotten a bit closer on paper and fight fans can now enjoy a better all-around tilt.
How it benefits McGregor (+350)
Generally trained MMA fighters wear 4oz gloves in the octagon. That may not seem like a huge change, but if you’ve spent the past decade of your life wearing those gloves before upgrading to 10 ounces, you’d certainly feel the difference. The change wouldn’t be overly dramatic to the fighter, but McGregor’s speed would shed quickly and endurance would fade more rapidly.
It’d be like going for a jog and then putting small weights on your ankles for your next run. You’d do alright at first, but tiredness would set in slowly. Not to mention, speed is McGregor’s strong suit. He’ll need every little bit of quickness to knock off one of the fastest jab punchers in the game.
Mentally, it’ll also play a huge role for McGregor. As mentioned, he’s been painted as ‘the guy with no shot’ for a while now and this has dramatically improved his chances. So much so, that his two-round “guarantee” for knocking out his opponent, may now have some legs. We’re not saying it’s going to happen, but the potential is there (somewhat).
How it benefits Mayweather (-500)
Floyd Mayweather Jr has one of the best jabs in the sport. He’s known for speed and his defense, but in this case let’s focus on the undefeated one’s agility. Because this fight would constitute as a junior-middleweight bout, 10oz gloves would be mandatory. This would be an issue for Floyd because he’s won almost all of his 49-bouts in 8oz mitts.
Needless to say, the alteration may slow Money down. Thanks to the new one-time rule in place, though, Floyd will be able to practice once again in his traditional gloves and resume punching at his regular speed.
