Offensive Edge – Mexico
Despite ceding majority of possession against Germany, the Mexicans still showed in their 2-2 draw just how clinical they can be in front of goal. The ever-dangerous Oribe Peralta popped up with yet another goal, the fifth in his Olympic career. Peralta and co., who are priced at +175 to win Group D, should be able to add a couple more goals to their total as they face a woefully overmatched Fiji team. The Fijians didn’t give a great account of themselves offensively in their first ever Olympic soccer match. They simply couldn’t hold on to the ball against South Korea as they had just a 21 percent share of possession. If they couldn’t do it against the South Koreans, arguably the weakest of Fiji’s three group opponents, they don’t stand much of a chance against the Mexicans either.
Defensive Edge – Mexico
The Mexico defense should be a bit disappointed after surrendering the lead not once, but twice against Germany. But if the Mexicans enjoy anything close to the 79 percent possession South Korea had against Fiji, the Mexican defense should have very little to worry about.
The Fijians were simply unable to stem the tide against South Korea. They gave up 32 total shots (18 on goal) as they were trounced 8-0. It’ll be considered a major success if they can manage to reduce the margin of defeat against a Mexican team that’s superior to South Korea.
Writer’s Prediction: Mexico shows no mercy as it thrashes Fiji 7-0.
